One Sephora-related perk? Birthday gifts. Each year, Beauty Insiders are given the choice between a couple of small sets during their birthday month. This year, there was a hair care set and a skin care set...but makeup will always have my heart. So, I chose a few sample products from Milk Makeup. This isn't a brand that I have a ton of experience with (minus a sample of their highlight in the shade Turnt. It recently made an appearance on my early fall favourites list) so I was curious to find out more. Ready to dive into this Milk Makeup set from Sephora? Here goes....
The Sephora Beauty Insider Birthday Gift set came with three items from Milk Makeup. Those beauty products included:
- Mini Kush Mascara
- Mini Lip + Cheek in Werk
- Hydro Grip Primer Sample
Considering this was a birthday gift set...there is a decent amount inside. The primer sample was pretty standard and was a one-use item. However, the mascara is a pretty decent sample size and is something that you can get many, many uses out of. The lip and cheek product is the same size as the sample highlighter that I've been using and loving. So I suspect that one will offer a lot of longevity as well. All in all, this offered a nice variety and an impressive amount of product. It was a wonderful way to test and try items from a brand that I am not overly familiar with.
How do these actually perform? Let's start with the Hydro Grip Primer. One word: wow. This stuff really holds onto product. My foundation didn't separate or move at all during the day. It has a somewhat tacky finish when applied, which is actually a good thing, because that tackiness seems to make the product stay. This is certainly something I would consider purchasing a full-sized version of in future. That being said, it likely won't be anytime in the near future. Quite frankly, these days, I don't have a lot of reasons for an all-day makeup look. I'm currently working from home and due to the pandemic....I rarely am out and about. But one day when the world is a little safer, the Hydro Grip Primer will come in handy.
Next up is the Mini Kush mascara. More recently, I have been trying to use up all of the sample mascaras in my collection (it makes sense to do this being at home more often. That way, I can save my favourite mascaras for the rare occasions when I actually go out somewhere). So...what is one more to add to the pile? It was exciting to test out this mini mascara from Milk Makeup. I was curious about how it would perform as I have heard good things about it from fellow beauty lovers. This was another wow. It delivers instant length. The overall look is bold, long, fluttery, romantic lashes. I absolutely love the way this performs! Though generally speaking, my favourite mascaras are ultra dark and dramatic, this offers such fantastic length. It is hard not to be pleased with the results. Though my favourite mascara is from the drugstore, if I were looking for a high end option, this would certainly make the short list.
Last on the list is the Lip + Cheek stick in the shade Werk. Unfortunately, this was the weak link. The shade is beautiful and adds a lovely flush of colour to the cheeks. Sadly, the formula is sticky and never really dries down completely. It doesn't fare much better on the lips. There is also an unusual and somewhat unpleasant scent. I can't quite put my finger on what it smells like but it isn't something that I care to have anywhere near my face.
There were some hits and some misses. The primer sample worked extremely well and delivered on all of the product claims. The mascara added incredible length and really opens up the eyes. On the other hand, the lip and cheek stick falls flat. Two out of three isn't bad! This certainly made me re-think Milk Makeup. There are a couple of items that will be on my future wish list. And the next time I'm at a Sephora, I may need to take a closer look at their display.
Have you tried any of these products? Are you a fan of Milk Makeup?
